Government Medical College (Kozhikode) is a premier Medical College in Kerala, is located in the city of Kozhikode. It was established in 1957. Since the institution has grown to the premier medical center of medical education in the state. Medical College Campus is a spread over 270 acres and is situated around 8 km east from the core of Kozhikode city. The establishment stone of the college was laid on 29 May 1957 by the then Governor of Kerala, Dr. B. Ramakrishna Rao. The College was formally initiated on 5 August 1957 by the then clergyman of Health, Kerala state Dr. A. R. Menon, whose activity and energy was in charge of the foundation of the organization.
The main hospital was dispatched in 1966 with 1183 beds. It was later enhanced by the Institute of Maternal and Child Health in 1975 (610 beds), the Savithri Devi Saboo Memorial Cancer Institute (101 beds) and the Chest Hospital (100 beds). A super specialty complex, another Block for the Institute of Maternal and Child Health, a fake appendage focus, the College of Nursing, the College of Pharmacy, Casualty (Emergency Services) complex, Samrakshana Kendram, and Vishrama Kendram were later added to the primary establishment. The present bed is 3025( MCH 1510, IMCH-1100, SSB-240,ICD-100, Sports Medicine-15, New Psychiatry Block-20 and Hemato-oncology-40). This whole facility makes it the largest bedded hospital in the country. If patient overload, the floor, and corridor are usually occupied.
The institution has grown up more than 60 years. The unification of undergraduate medical education was achieved in the 1960s. The expansion and establishment of postgraduate medical education in various branches started in the years of 1970s. Now, this college has super specialty courses in 10 departments. Kidney Transplantation also including in the institution. A well equipped Cardiac Catheterization lab and Telecobalt Therapy are already there in the hospital. The college also provides the degree and postgraduate courses of nursing and pharmacy and degree and diploma course of paramedical sciences. Almost all departments and offices of the college and hospitals are provided the computer facilities at all time.
The latest additions to the college hospitals are the Multistoried Super Speciality Complex, a new block for maternal and child health, and the Institute of sports medicine. The modern hospital unit starts with the outpatient clinics of super specialties also. Later the inpatient wards also started in the hospital. The three new departments Department of Neonatology, Department of Emergency and Critical Care Medicine and Department of Family Medicine are added to this college. A new ward for Hemato-Oncology patients.
